Unlocking Regional Potential: EU Projects Unite in Belgrade for Innovation Synergies

From January 21–22, 2026, the Palace of Science in Belgrade served as a strategic hub for regional research collaboration. Hosted by Tecnalia Serbia as part of the 6SAVA project, this “Joint Meeting of Downstream Pathway to Synergies Projects” brought together four EU projects, SynHealth, 6SAVA, SynGRID, and PATTERN. Funded under the Horizon Europe WIDERA programme, these projects are dedicated to transforming the research landscape in “Widening” countries by building robust innovation capacities and enhancing regional collaboration with top-tier institutions.

Day 1: Engaging the Local Ecosystem

The event kicked off with a hybrid workshop focused on a Joint Mapping of Innovation Stakeholders between the project partners. Sister projects shared their experiences in engaging key stakeholder categories, identifying which collaborations have been most effective and which groups remain “hard-to-engage” within their regional ecosystems.

The afternoon transitioned into a vibrant, public networking event at the Palace of Science, drawing an impressive turnout of approximately 80 in-person attendees. Following welcoming remarks from Dr. Miloš Kostić of Tecnalia Serbia and the 6SAVA project, and Prof. dr Kosta Jovanović from the University of Belgrade (School of Electrical Engineering) and the CITADELS project, the session featured project presentations from SynGRID, presented by project partner IRI UL, and SynHealth, presented by the project coordinator Genos. The subsequent Q&A and networking cocktail saw an encouragingly high level of engagement from local stakeholders, sparking rich discussions that established a strong foundation for future cross-border collaborations.

Day 2: Bridging Horizon Europe and National S3 Frameworks

On the second day, the focus shifted to the structural “how” of research sustainability during Workshop 2: Bridging Horizon Europe and national S3 frameworks. Partners from 6SAVA in Serbia, SynHealth in Croatia, SynGRID in Slovenia, and PATTERN in Greece presented their national Smart Specialisation Strategy (S3) priorities and regional funding schemes. By identifying challenges and complementarities between these Widening countries, the consortium successfully aligned their strategic goals to better link EU-level activities with regional funding opportunities.
