Karolinska Institutet
Karolinska Institutet was founded by King Karl XIII in 1810 as an “academy for the training of skilled army surgeons”. Today, KI is a modern medical university, the largest centre of medical academic research in Sweden offering a wide range of medical courses and programmes.
With its close relationship to the clinical milieu, a well-established infrastructure and a stable financial situation, KI has excellent prerequisites for sustaining high quality research and education. Since 1901, the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has selected the Nobel laureates in Physiology or Medicine.

Ioannis Parodis, MD, PhD
Senior consultant rheumatologist at the Karolinska University Hospital and Associate Professor of Rheumatology at Karolinska Institutet.
Serves as a Director of studies for the elective courses of the medical program at Karolinska Institutet and examiner for internal medicine at the Department of Medicine Solna, Karolinska Institutet. He is also affiliated to the School of Medical Sciences at Örebro University.
With his research, Ioannis aims at improving the management and surveillance of people living with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and lupus nephritis. He is currently leading a research team at the Center for Molecular Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, where he conducts research of clinical and translational nature.
Last but not least, Ioannis has an interest in medical pedagogy and works currently on the development of a novel virtual patient modality for enhancing the acquirement of clinical reasoning skills and for facilitating interprofessional learning.
Dionysis Nikolopoulos, MD, PhD
Post-doctoral researcher at Karolinska Institutet.
As a medical graduate of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Dionysis’s interest in Rheumatology began during his time as a student at Rheumatology clinic of Attikon University Hospital, sparking a passion for lupus research. He completed a Ph.D. in Immunology under Professor Boumpas’ supervision, entitled “Neuropsychiatric Lupus: Clinical and Pathogenetic Aspects”.
Dionysis’s research focuses on understanding the natural history and pathogenesis of SLE to enhance treatment and outcomes, with a particular emphasis on neuropsychiatric aspects.
Natalia Sherina, PhD
Laboratory manager at Karolinska Institutet.
Natalia holds a PhD in Immunology from Karolinska Institutet and has carried out a postdoctoral training on characterising anti-SARS-CoV-2 immune responses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
During her doctoral training, her research focused on understanding how specific B cells contribute to development of protection against infection on one side and autoimmune condition on the other.
Natalia is a certified project manager with a broad experience in R&D, drug development, pre-clinical and translational research. Her previous experience in managing research projects, defining goals, planning, and coordinating activities with the team helps her to oversee projects.
